Royer Pharmacy was started in downtown Ephrata in 1879 by pharmacist George Royer. A very interesting and fun history of the company's 141 years can be found on the history tab of the RoyerPharmacy.com website.
Royer Pharmacy is owned by siblings Donald and Robert Sherman, Patricia Leaman and Pamela Groff. Don, Bob and Pat are pharmacists and Pam is the company treasurer. Their father, William Sherman, joined the company in 1954 and worked with the family to develop the company for over 50 years.

Company president Don Sherman cited several reasons for the decision.
  • The owners are nearing retirement age.
  • Restrictive contracts and decreasing reimbursements from insurance, Medicare and Medicaid plans are making it increasingly difficult to stay in business and continue to offer the types of services patients need.
  • The merging of prescription files with CVS ensures that patients will have access to a company that is likely to be around for a long time.
  • CVS has the depth and vertical integration to provide multiple services that a small independent pharmacy cannot.
  • Employees will have a chance to be considered for employment by CVS
Staff was informed of the decision at a company meeting on 3-3-20. Sherman stated that 'while the meeting had a sad message, we have great employees who realize the many difficulties of the current pharmacy environment.' The combination of great patients, a fantastic and dedicated staff and a focus on personal patient needs are the reason the company became one of the oldest independently owned pharmacies in the country.

The Sherman family wishes to thank the public for their generations of trust and loyal patronage. It's been a great run and we and our wonderful staff couldn't have done it without you. It's been our pleasure to serve you.
